Fibroids Symptoms
Often, fibroids do not cause any symptoms and these are usually picked up during routine scans for other reasons – these can be left alone. Symptoms (and associated severity) will depend on the size, location and number of fibroids.
Heavy or Prolonged Periods
Many women with fibroids experience heavier or longer periods than usual. This can lead to fatigue or anemia if bleeding is significant. Even small fibroids near the uterine lining can sometimes cause noticeable changes in your menstrual flow.
Pelvic Pain or Pressure
Fibroids can cause a constant sense of pressure or fullness in the lower abdomen or pelvis. Larger fibroids may press on surrounding organs, leading to discomfort, bloating or feeling like your abdomen is heavier than normal.
Pain During Intercourse
Some women with fibroids experience pain during intercourse, particularly if the fibroids are located near the uterine cavity or cervix. The discomfort can vary from mild to more intense, depending on size and location.
Frequent Urination
Fibroids pressing on the bladder can make you feel the urge to urinate more often. You may feel the need to go even when your bladder isn’t full. Nighttime trips to the bathroom (nocturia) can also become more common.
Lower Back or Leg Pain
Fibroids can sometimes press on nerves in the pelvis, causing lower back or leg pain. This pain may come and go or feel persistent, depending on the fibroid’s position and size.
Other Symptoms of Fibroids
- Constipation or difficulty with bowel movements
- Abdominal bloating or swelling
- Fatigue due to heavy bleeding
- Fertility issues or complications during pregnancy
